The Wellington News and Events

February News

With rebuild and refurb well underway, our thoughts are going towards the detail of re-opening the Welly. With a new kitchen team, relocated bar and a completely altered ground floor to “break-in” we’ll need a fair bit of testing to make sure everything is right. AND THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN!

Around Late April early May-time we’ll be running some test services at both lunchtimes and evenings and need some volunteers for a free meal! Our guinea pigs will be mostly drawn from our Friends of the Welly database, so if you’d like to be considered, please join up via this website. (There’s no cost). This will bring you regular newsletters, one of which will invite you to apply for a dry run .
Best do it now before you forget!

Meantime our grateful thanks again to all who are doing so much to get the Welly back up and running.

Latest News After the Fire
October 2009

First of all, everyone in the team would like to thank you for your very kind messages of support following the fire, and for your continued interest in the Wellington’s re-opening. I can assure you all that we are as impatient as you are to see the Welly up and running again! We’d also like to thank you for your patience and understanding on the traffic issues caused by the building work.

The rebuild has certainly presented its share of difficulties, but I am pleased to tell you it is now on track for re-opening around Easter 2010 and we are hugely looking forward to welcoming you back then. I can also reveal that we are working to develop some overnight accommodation in our rebuilding plans, giving the Welly its own hotel facilities once again. Sneak previews will be taking place in the coming months.

Plans for Christmas?
October 2009

Some of our Friends have been kind enough to enquire about Christmas bookings this year, but unfortunately we will not re-open in time. However, the good news is that I shall shortly be taking over The Royal Oak on the Codicote to Hitchin road, just ten minutes drive North of the Welly. We have some new and different ideas for here but rest assured you will receive the same warm welcome; well worth a visit to see what we are up to! I’ll keep you updated with what’s going on but if you would like to talk Christmas, please email me directly at liz.gouldie@gmail.com.

In the meantime, we shall be taking part in the Christmas Advent windows project in Welwyn Village , and are currently busy researching whether the Wellington has now become the oldest pub in Hertfordshire. We know it isn’t the oldest building to subsequently become a pub, but we think it has been a working inn longer than any other. Your input to this research is very welcome!
